Abstract
The pathogen Helicobacter pylori colonizes the gastric mucosa of half of mankind and causes a variety of diseases. While in the early days of H. pylori research most attention was given to its ability to cause peptic ulcers, much of the current focus is on its causative role in gastric cancer. Gastric cancer ranks second in malignancy-associated mortality, and in certain regions in The People’s Republic of China this mortality amounts to 70/100.000/year.
