Neuroprotective Role of Endogenous Adenosine in Methamphetamine-Induced Toxicity in Rat Striatum

  • Chapter
Neurotoxic Factors in Parkinson’s Disease and Related Disorders

Abstract

Methamphetamine (MTH) has been found to induce long-lasting changes in the nigrostriatal dopamine (DA) system. The MTH-induced neurotoxicity is characterized by decreases in the number of DA transporters (DAT), in DA concentration and tyrosine hydroxylase activity (Ricuarte et al., 1982; Schmidt et al., 1985). A massive release of DA after repeated doses of MTH yields a highly reactive oxygen species and rapid reduction in DAT activity (Fleckenstein et al., 1997).
