Abstract

In 1987 nitric oxide (NO) was identified as an important endothelium-derived muscle relaxant (Ignarro et al., 1987; Palmer et al., 1987). NO, produced by the endothelium from arginine, act as a local vasodilator by diffusing into vascular smooth muscle and incorporating intracellularly with the heme present in guanylyl cyclase (Ignarro, 1989). This activates the guanylyl cyclase and results in an increased synthesis of cyclic GMP (cGMP) and consequent relaxation of smooth muscle cells.
