Abstract
The human carotid body is subjected to both hypertrophy and proliferation of various cell types in the course of general diseases such as arterial hypertension and states of chronic hypoxemia. Exact identification of the cell types involved in these structural changes is often impossible in routinely stained preparations. Thus, the present light-and electronmicroscopical study was aimed to elucidate the value of some immunohistochemical markers generally used in neuropathology for cellular subtyping in the human carotid body.
