Summary
The knowledges and practices of social science developed in response to the practical problems of everyday life in modem societies, and they have, in turn, played a role in transforming people’s thought and action. Yet this process has not been a conscious one for those involved in the transformation. Increasing numbers of social scientists have taken part in it, unaware of the social preconditions and consequences of their work. Only rarely, notably in periods of intensified uncertainty, has critical self-reflection on the endeavor of social science been articulated, and it has even less frequently met a favorable response. Efforts at clarifying the major problems of a period and rethinking the modes of dealing with them have usually consisted of hybrid attacks on modest piecemeal research, threatening the marketable credit of the profession. The voice of critique has thus become marginalized, while at the same time the difficulties of grasping what is going on in the world and among ourselves have become more pressing, both for social scientists and lay people. Burying one’s head in the sands of specialization, business as usual, is one way of reacting to this situation. However, it would be more promising to resume the intellectual task of explaining and interpreting the problems of our times, analyzing them from a historical perspective and reflecting our own participation in the reproduction or alteration of living conditions.
