Abstract

A Navstar satellite is a highly complicated but surprisingly reliable machine. Although it is constructed from 65,000 separate parts, it is designed to last 7 1/2 years or 580 million miles, whichever comes first. Throughout its on-orbit life, it points part of itself toward the earth, part of itself toward the sun—all within half a degree accuracy.
