Abstract
This paper reviews published work on the interactions of electroless catalysts with plastic substrates and also presents new work correlating the results obtained from polymers with those from inorganic substrates. The activity of conventional Sn/Pd electroless catalysts can be altered by chemical groups on the surface of polymer substrates. This effect has been demonstrated for polymer surfaces modified by photooxidation, plasma oxidation, and ozonation. It is dependent on the choice of polymer, catalyst, and electroless bath composition. A similar interaction is shown to occur between conventional Sn/Pd catalysts and inorganic substrates. The behavior of conventional catalysts is compared to the behavior of catalystsoformed from evaporated films of Cu, Ag, and Au (about 20 Å thick). The evaporated films have the interesting trait of producing either positive or negative electroless images on photooxidized plastics, depending on the choice of electroless bath conditions.
