Abstract

The isolation of insulin in 1922 by Banting and Best laid the foundation for the modern management of diabetes mellitus. While the life expectancy of diabetic patients has been extended, the emergence of secondary complications such as macrovascular disease, retinopathy, neuropathy and nephropathy, is currently responsible for the devastating morbidity and mortality of this disease. Intensive conventional medical therapy has not yet been shown to effectively address these problems and this may relate to an inexact control of the metabolic derangement.
