Abstract

In this chapter we describe and analyze a wide range of multicriterion decision methods gathered under the heading of outranking methods. They all involve the fertile concept of the outranking relation, which emerged during the sixties through the influence of French workers. Among the latter the name of B. Roy stands out as the initiator of the famous ELECTRE method, which is the prototype outranking method. Roy has become the leader of a whole generation of workers dedicated to promoting multicriteria decision and increasing knowledge in this domain.
