Metalloregulation of Soft Metal Resistance Pumps

  • Chapter
Metals and Genetics

Abstract

Many metals are required for cellular growth. Others, such as cadmium, lead, arsenic and antimony, are toxic. Some, such as zinc and copper, are both micronutrients but toxic in excess. For these processes cells must contain both uptake and efflux systems. Perhaps due to geochemical sources of metals, bacterial resistances to metals probably arose early in evolution. Before the modern use of antibiotics, bacterial metal resistance determinants encoding extrusion systems were more widespread than antibiotic resistances (Datta and Hughes, 1983).
