Abstract

The joint advances in several enabling technologies such as imaging devices and scanners, storage supports, compression standards, and multimedia architectures, are pulling the development of archives of digital images at an ever increasing rate. This type of archives is assuming a role of growing relevance within a wide range of information systems. Notable examples include applications for multimedia authoring, medical archives, inventorying of artistic and cultural goods, product catalogues, geographic information systems, remote sensing, scientific investigation, education, and entertainment. And many other are not mentioned for the sake of brevity. The potential of images in all these contexts is being further enhanced by the development of wide-spread and high-capacity network infrastructures [1, 2].
