Performing Arts in Europe

  • Chapter
Privatization and Culture

Abstract

In recent years the performing arts sector in Europe has witnessed a growing distance between the institutions and the public authorities that contribute financially to their activities. In this sense, one could speak of autonomization or désétatisation (even though the public authority involved is not necessarily only the state but the municipal authority as well). This process encompassed changes in the concrete legal status of the performing arts organization, appointment responsibilities (boards, management, supervision of the programming and financial policy), funding responsibility, responsibility towards the employees, their employment status and the type of contract they receive.
