Adenosine and Cardiac Arrhythmias

Summary

The negative chronotropic and dromotropic properties of adenosine on the sinus and atrioventricular (AV) nodes have been know since 1929 [Drury et al, 1929]. These potent properties and its short half life in vivo have allowed adenosine to establish its place as a unique and invaluable tool for both elucidating the mechanism of cardiac arrhythmias and for treating supraventricular tachycardia.
