Abstract

The gastrointestinal tract in its entire length, together with the adjoining viscera, is in a variable relationship with immunological events, giving ample possibility for direct antigen exposure. The antigens gain access to the gastrointestinal tract (i) with food intake, (ii) secretion, (iii) from the adjacent organs, (iv) as the degradation products of physiological and pathological biochemical processes taking place in the gastrointestinal tract, (v) as particles of bacteria and parasites, (vi) by reversion of foetal antigens and finally (vii) by transformation of the cells, tissues and their products into autoallergens.
