Abstract

This chapter contains a discussion of four medical problems found in children: seizures, asthma, obesity, and hyperactivity. Although there is no common etiological thread for these four disorders, they are linked by the following: (1) they are prevalent among children; (2) the first line of therapy is generally through the pediatrician; (3) each problem can affect the child academically, socially, and medically; and (4) one of the first lines of treatment is generally the use of some pharmacological agent.

Preparation of this manuscript was supported in part by Project 910, U.S. Maternal and Child Health, H.S.M.S.A., Department of Health, Education and Welfare, as awarded to the Center for Developmental and Learning Disorders, University of Alabama in Birmingham School of Medicine, Birmingham, Alabama.
