Abstract
The honour of presenting the introductory review-paper concerning the overall topic of this two weeks’ symposium is certainly more than balanced by the burden and by the challenge to the invited speaker. These were admittedly my feelings when I was preparing this lecture, to be given to a distinguished audience of experts in their own and related areas of research, who of course are much more intimately familiar with progress and problems in their respective fields. Thus, to relieve this burden, I decided that it should not be my task to tell you about your special subjects, but rather to set the stage for the presentations and discussions we are going to have during the following two weeks. This will require a certain amount of generalisation, with all the difficulties and disadvantages that the generalist may encounter in discussion with the specialist. But it also gives the opportunity of a broad view of an ever enlarging scene, and does not exclude the bringing of one or the other aspect or detail into higher magnification or better focus, or the aiming of the spotlight on to special subjects which definitely will need much more discussion during our symposium, while permitting the selection of such special subjects which reflect my personal interest and experience.
