The Correlation Analysis of Nucleophilicity

  • Chapter
Correlation Analysis in Chemistry

Abstract

A nucleophile is usually defined as a reagent having the tendency to form a new covalent bond by sharing an electron pair.1 Some reducing agents are thus not included in this definition. Historically, the first nucleophilic reagents to be studied possessed a center with partial negative charge and therefore had a great affinity for a seat of partial positive charge, viz., the atomic nucleus, hence their name. The latter is called an electrophilic center.2 Indeed, more generally, a reaction between a nucleophilic reagent and an electrophilic center in a molecule termed the substrate should be assimilated to a reaction of the acid-base type, whether in the sense of Lewis3 or that of Pearson.4 In the latter case, it will be seen later that the notion of polarizability plays an important part.5 Finally, it is usual to speak of basicity in connection with thermodynamic magnitudes and of nucleophilicity in connection with kinetic magnitudes.
