Genetic Control of α Chains of Rabbit IgA: Allotypic Specificities on the Variable and the Constant Regions

  • Chapter
Contemporary Topics in Molecular Immunology

Abstract

One approach to understanding the control of immunoglobulin (Ig) synthesis is to examine the inherited differences of the immunoglobulins, namely allotypes, among individuals of a species. The identification and quantitation of these allotypes provides some insight into the complexity of the Ig genome with respect to gene interaction, selected gene expression, and the regulation thereof. Allotypes of rabbit Ig were discovered by Oudin (1956) with precipitating antisera which had been prepared by cross-immunizing rabbits with IgG obtained from other rabbits. Each alloantiserum prepared in this manner reacts with Ig molecules from some but not all rabbits (Oudin, 1960a, b; Dray et al., 1963a). The antigenic property identified by each antiserum is designated the allotypic specificity.
