Some Measurements of Extracellular Potassium Activity in the Mammalian Central Nervous System

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 50))

Abstract

Although changes in extracellular K+ activity (aK) have long been suspected in mechanisms of function and dysfunction in the central nervous system (Dubner & Gerard, 1939; Grafstein, 1956; Kuffler, 1967), only recently has it become practicable to record them both directly and with precise localization (Hinke, 1961; Walker, 1971). We have used micro-electrodes containing a liquid ion-exchanger (Walker, 1971) to measure extracellular aK in the cerebral cortex, and also in regions of the spinal cord and the medulla which receive the terminals of somato-sensory nerve fibres (Krnjevic & Morris, 1972).
