Coulomb Retardation and Energy-Loss Effects in Ion-Induced K-Shell Ionisation

Abstract

In this work we present results pertinent to the study of Coulomb retardation and projectile kinetic energy-loss effects in K-shell ionisation. At the reduced incident energies used, these effects, together with electronic binding energy variation and relativistic effects on the electron wavefunction, must be taken into account if a comparison between theoretical and experimental cross sections is to be made. In a previous paper (Jesus and Lopes 1980) we reviewed arguments showing that in the ratios of deuteron- and proton-induced cross sections the binding and relativistic effects are of minor importance. Therefore, in comparing the present experimental ratios to theoretical calculations we refer mainly to the Coulomb and energy-loss effects.
