Abstract

Before a commander can commit his troops to action, he must decide just how, when and where he will do so. In order to reach a decision he must make an estimate of the situation. This estimate may be long and deliberate or short and fragmentary, but it always includes the following five steps1:

  • • the mission

  • • the situation and courses of action

  • • the analysis of opposing courses of action

  • • the comparison of own courses of action

  • • the decision
