Abstract

There are a number of reasons why organizations within community education in its widest sense have been exploring how computers can be used for the benefit of the communities which they serve. The ethos behind such developments has already been suggested in Chapter 1: it is that the use of computers in community education could play a part in ameliorating those social effects of computers which appear to be damaging. Computers are also potentially powerful tools which community educators could use in the day-to-day running of their organizations and in improving the services which they offer to the public. Moreover, as Chapter 3 has suggested, the use of computers in community organizations can be one way of providing computer literacy to members of staff and to the wider public who actually use the computers.
