Abstract
It is the purpose of this communication to serve as an introduction to the research reports which comprise the program of the opening session of these meetings. This session is nominally devoted to a general consideration of the ways in which natural and synthetic sex hormones influence the form or the function of the gastrointestinal organs. As the subsequent seven papers in this volume attest, however, the program has been limited to the presentation of studies dealing solely with sex hormone effects on certain aspects of hepatic physiology and biochemistry, and particularly with those hormone effects on liver function from which inferences relevant to man might be drawn.
