Part of the book series: Monographs in Geoscience ((MOGEO))

Abstract

A chapter of this length can be at most a guide to x-ray methods in geochemical analysis. To see why this is true, consider, for example, that the 1968 review in Analytical Chemistry of x-ray absorption and emission by Campbell and Brown1 lists 17 new books and 695 references, and that its counterpart by Merritt and Streib2 on x-ray-diffraction records over a third as many items of each kind. These reviews, which appear every two years, and several books3–6 are the main sources of information for this chapter. They are only a fraction of what should be consulted by anyone seriously interested in using x-ray methods in geochemistry.

The authors are grateful for permission to use certain passages, tables, and figures from Liebhafsky, H. A., Pfeiffer, H. G., Winslow, E. H., and Zemany, P. D., X-Ray Absorption and Emission in Analytical Chemistry, John Wiley & Sons, New York, 1960.
