Abstract
In contrast with pi-bonded organometallic compounds of the lanthanides1 and actinides2, which date to the mid 1950’s, encompass a large variety of ligands3 and culminate with the synthesis of bis-(cyclooctatetraenyl)uranium (“uranocene”),4 the preparation of sigma-bonded lanthanide and actinide organometallics is relatively recent. Early attempts to prepare simple oganometallic derivatives, such as U(CH3)4 5, Y(C2H5)3, and Sc(C2H5)3 6, often resulted in poorly characterized or irreproducible products. Sigma-bonded derivatives of both the lanthanide7,8 and actinide9 elements are now known and well characterized.10
