The Influence of the Limits of Phase Stability and Atomic Order on Superconductivity of Binary and Ternary A15-Type Compounds

  • Chapter
Low Temperature Physics-LT 13

Abstract

Interest in the physical problems connected with A15-type alloys and compounds has been motivated above all by the outstanding superconducting properties of some of their representatives. In addition, certain particular features have contributed to stimulate research on these materials, e.g., the low-temperature structural phase transition in V3Si, Nb3Sn, and possibly V3Ga, emphasizing the influence of the electronic structure on elastic properties and crystal stability. More generally, the occurrence of metallic systems with exceptionally low degeneracy temperatures has a number of interesting consequences. Finally, let us mention that the particular atomic arrangement of the A15-type structure justifies to some extent an elegant and mathematically simple description in terms of a linear band model, although the latter should be considered as a useful thinking aid rather than a basis for quantitative calculations.
