Orientation of Short-Lived Mercury Isotopes by Means of Optical Pumping Detected by β and γ Radiation

Atomic Physics 3

Abstract

The expansion of optical spectroscopy to short-lived isotopes (T1/2~sec) from the valley of nuclear stability encounters several difficulties:

  1. i)

    the production mechanism of isotopes far from stability is no longer specific for one isotope only;

  2. ii)

    the number of atoms produced in saturation is small;

  3. iii)

    the preparation time of samples becomes long compared to the lifetime of the isotope in question.
