Abstract

Several representative halogenated and aromatic hydrocarbon environmental contaminants were fed to trout and their effects on hepatic mixed function oxidase (MFO) enzyme systems studied. The insecticide p,p’-DDT and its metabolite p,p’-DDE did not induce the trout MFO enzyme system whereas the polycyclic aromatic 3-methyl-cholanthrene and the polychlorinated biphenyl Aroclor 1254 induced various components of this system, most dramatically ethoxycoumarin O-de-ethylase activity. A PCB replacement composed of chlorinated butylated diphenyl ethers (XFS-4169 L: Dow Chemical Co.) had no effect on trout MFO activity other than a slight increase in cytochrome P-450 concentration.
