Abstract

The subjects of marriage and marital relationships have long escaped rigorous scientific inquiry. Considered by many to be too “soft” a topic to study empirically, marriage had most often been dealt with through case studies and anecdotal descriptions. In recent decades, however, the marital relationship has received increased cultural and societal attention; consequently social scientists have become more curious and rigorous in their investigation of the salient issues (Gurman and Kniskern, 1979; Jacobson, 1978).
