Peritoneal Macrophages Release Prostaglandin E and Thromboxane B2 in Response to C3b

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 155))

Abstract

Macrophages have surface receptors for C3b, the larger product cleaved from complement component C3 upon activation of both the classical and alternative complement pathways (1). We have investigated whether or not C3b stimulates macrophages to release prostaglandin E (PGE) and thromboxane B2 (TXB2), metabolites of arachidonic acid produced in the cyclooxygenase pathway (2).
