Abstract

The study of immunological cell markers in human leukemias and lymphomas has made it possible to establish the nature and origin of the proliferating cells and to demonstrate the heterogeneity of many conditions which appeared previously rather homogeneous to the hematologist. Since leukemic cells usually appear to be frozen at a given stage along the differentiation pathway, these studies have also provided important insights into the biology of the progenitors of hematopoietic cells which correspond to the normal counterpart of the leukemic cell. The maturation arrest characteristic of many human leukemic cells can sometimes be reverted after in vitro stimulation. Such studies may eventually lead to an understanding of crucial differences between the regulation of normal and leukemic cells.
