Abstract
A solution of hemoglobin can be considered as a plasma expander with blood-gas-transportîng activity since It has colloid osmotic as well as O2 and CO2 transport properties. Animal experiments showed that stroma-free hemoglobin solutions can be infused without affecting renal function of the animals (Rabiner et al., 1967). Therefore stroma-free hemoglobin solutions may be potential blood substitutes especially in emergency situations when other sources of compatible blood are lacking.
