Abstract
Carbon-nutrient interactions are identified as important topics for ecological research in the 1980s. The linkages between carbon and nutrients during plant litter decay are the focus of this paper. A recently developed model for estimating the maximum net immobilization potential in decomposing litter is reviewed. The factors that control the magnitude of nitrogen immobilization are considered using the model. Key research questions about carbon-nitrogen interactions during plant litter decay are identified.
