Abstract
Counseling psychology is a major professional subspecialty in psychology and the helping professions. The 1984 survey of the Council of Counseling Psychology Training Programs revealed that the council has 60 program members, each of which (in 1984) received a mean of 85 applicants and matriculated a mean of 44.5 students per program (at all year levels). That same year, approximately 290 students from these programs were awarded doctoral degrees. Clearly, the sustained and extensive production of doctorates trained in counseling psychology is significant in number and requires concerted attention with respect to the competencies and skills these graduates acquire through the course of their training.
