Abstract
A problem of nomenclature exists over this particular area of tree tissue culture. It is hard to come up with a hard-and-fast definition of an ornamental. There are a number of trees that may have economic importance in their own right as fruit trees or as timber crops but that are still used to provide pleasant surroundings; this creates a problem of definition as to what is strictly an ornamental tree. The simplest definition of an ornamental tree is that it is a tree grown purely for aesthetic value and not being grown for the harvest of fruit or wood for commercial gain. This chapter is deliberately brief, as other relevant material is covered in other chapters of this book.
