Abstract

Freshwater ecosystems are being degraded by increasing concentrations of the trace element selenium (Se). Elevated concentrations of waterborne Se have been recognized as an environmental problem in aquatic ecosystems throughout the United States since the late 1950s. Concern has increased significantly in recent years because of the increased mobilization and concentration of Se in aquatic ecosystems, mainly due to anthropogenic activities.
