Abstract
A claim that a new paradigm is emerging in evolutionary biology cannot be ignored; if it is true, it is important. To establish it, the editors have gathered together a number of essays by authors whose common characteristic is that they do not see themselves as orthodox Darwinists. The reasons for this are various: some have genuine disagreements with neo-Darwinism; some think they do, but only because they have a mistaken view of the Darwinian position; still others are working on subjects to which Darwinian theory is barely relevant. The result, like the proverbial curate’s egg, is good in parts, but indigestible if swallowed whole. The contents are so diverse that they can only be reviewed piecemeal.
