Abstract

Focal epilepsy in the human is characterized by the occurrence of chronic, spontaneous seizures. The animal model that best approximates the histological characteristics, natural history and electrophysiological properties of the human condition is the chronic monkey model in which the cortical focus is induced by the subpial injection of alumina gel (Lockard and Ward, 1980). The seizures become clinically apparent many weeks after the cortical scarring has stabilized. They are of focal onset, occur spontaneously at random intervals and, once their pattern is established, their frequency is relatively constant and the epilepsy appears to persist indefinitely.
