Oxygen Dependence of Energy State and Cardiac Work in the Perfused Rat Heart

  • Chapter
Oxygen Transport to Tissue XII

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 277))

Abstract

The effects of hypoxia can be observed by noting changes in the circulatory system and tissue metabolism. Theoretical and experimental studies (Sugano et al., 1974) have shown a dependence of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation on oxygen tension. Thus, a reduction in oxygen tension results in a decrease of energy production. To date, there have been few studies concerning the relation between cellular oxygen concentration and high energy phosphates in heart tissue (Fukuda et al., 1989).
