Immunological Problems in Kidney Disease — An Introduction

Abstract

Nephrology is a relatively newly-born science, first recognized as such in 1960, the year of our 1st International Congress. Since then, it has rapidly expanded both in theory and in practice. Progress in nephrology is probably of greater importance than that made in other areas of medical research during the same period of time. Some of the most outstanding contributions are related to renal pathophysiology investigation of kidney function and body electrolytes; new classification of renal diseases; the pathogenesis, management and therapy of hypertension, and stone formation and allied disorders. Finally, the new revolutionary approaches to replace kidney function, both theoretical and technological, deserve special emphasis.
