Abstract

Powerful contact hydrolysis on the border of intestinal cells and chyme is possible only because of the extensively developed surface of the cell membranes. And it is clear that the surface provided by the villi (visible to the naked eye) is not sufficient to account for the hydrolysis. For this reason it should be sufficient to conclude on the basis of the physiological experiments that submicroscopic porosity exists which, firstly, sharply increases the active surface and, secondly, imparts to the surface of the intestinal epithelium properties of the pore catalyst.
