Abstract
We have observed that angiotensin II plasma concentrations in polyethyleneglycol (PEG) treated rats were closely correlated with water intake by the animals (1). The angiotensin II plasma levels were in the range previously determined to be dipsogenic (2). The aim of the present investigation was to establish whether the correlation between angiotensin II plasma levels and the amount of water intake in PEG treated rats was based on a causal relationship. As an investigative tool we used captopril — an angiotensin I converting enzyme inhibitor — in order to block the formation of angiotensin II from angiotensin I. We approached the problem by this pharmacological means because it was shown in isopro-terenol induced thirst that captopril may blunt water intake (3).
