Abstract
To label hydra directly by feeding them on tissues that have been previously made radioactive or by exposing them to 14CO2, The ingested radioactive tissue labels the endoderm first and, within a day, most of the hydra’s cells (Lenhoff, 1961). The labeled 14CO2 passes directly into hydra and labels most intensely the interstitial cells and their derivative cells (Lenhoff, 1959); in the case of green hydra, the 14CO2 labels the endosymbiotic algae most intensely (Muscatine and Lenhoff, 1965).
