Abstract

Although the discovery of the neuroglia in general by Rudolph Virchow1 was an achievement of the mid-19th century, it was not until the first quarter of this century that Pio Del Rio Hortega2 described a particular kind of neuroglia. He suggested for it the term oligodendroglia, originating from the Greek words όλιγος (little, few), δένδρον (tree), and γλια (glue), to emphasize differences in size and in the number of processes between the oligodendrocytes (ODC) and astrocytes (AC).
