Abstract
Among the three major wood components lignin is the least utilized by the chemical industry. Most of the proposed wood hydrolysis schemes were optimized for the production of a single product, mainly the production of glucose, underrating any possible benefits gained by the utilization of lignin. The potential from the utilization of lignin to the overall economics of any wood hydrolysis process was recognized only a few years ago (Goldstein 1975, 1979) and since then considerable effort has been devoted towards the development of integrated wood conversion processes.
