Abstract

The prefix pulmo is derived from the Latin term pulmones, which means organ of respiration or the lung (W. B. Saunders, 1981). Respiration refers to two processes: external respiration and internal respiration. The former is “the absorption of oxygen (O2) and the removal of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the body as a whole,” and the latter refers to “the gaseous exchange between the cells and their fluid medium” (Ganong, 1981, p. 507). This chapter will focus on external respiration, particularly as it relates to lung—brain function and neuropsychologic disturbance.
