Abstract

A 26-year-old male is the driver of an automobile that swerved off the road. On admission, he is intoxicated and smells of alcohol. Central nervous system examination is otherwise normal. His pulse is 120; his blood pressure is 110/40. Chest examination is normal. There is a large contusion over the midabdomen. The abdominal examination is difficult to perform owing to the patient’s uncooperative status, but it seems to disclose tenderness and guarding throughout.
