Fruit Flies

Abstract

The genus Anastreplza is endemic to the American continent. It is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions from Southern USA to Northern Argentina. So far 180 species have been identified. Some species are serious pests of native and exotics fruits, such as: A. ludens (Loew), A. suspensa (Loew), A. fraterculus (Wiedemann), A. obliqua (Macquart), A. striata Schiner and A. grandis (Macquart). In Mexico 18 species have been reported including the genera Lucumaphila and Pseudodacus (Foote, 1967) which were later synonymized with Anastrepha (Steyskal, 1977a). However recent studies have shown the existence of other 9 species (Aluja et al., 1987; Hernandez-Ortiz, 1987).
