Abstract
Lymphoma is a diverse group of malignant disorders of the lymphatic system that arise in nodal tissues. Typically, they are categorized by histology into Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas. The present role of surgery in the management of lymphoma is to establish a tissue diagnosis or to serve as a diagnostic adjunct when noninvasive diagnostic studies are indeterminate. Definitive treatment based on staged disease then follows. While resection of bulky disease is generally considered to be of limited benefit, surgery on occasion can be a useful adjunct. This is usually limited to localized resections of gastrointestinal lymphomas. The definitive treatment of lymphoma may include radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of both.
