Abstract

Early studies of Schizophyllum, as well as of other members of the Basidiomycetes, were concerned first with the general features of the life cycle and later with the details of sexuality. About a century ago, it was found that two distinct vegetative mycelial stages occurred: first, the homokaryon stage, typically consisting of uninucleate cells with simple septa, and second, the dikaryon stage, constituted of binucleate cells with buckle-shaped appendages at the septa. It was also known that sporulating fruiting bodies were typically formed only on the dikaryon, but the origin of the dikaryotic mycelium remained a mystery until 1917. In that year, Matilde Bensaude of Nemours, France, and Hans Kniep of Wiirtzburg, Germany, independently discovered that the dikaryon was the heterokaryotic product of the sexual interaction of two compatible homokaryotic mycelia in Coprinus lagopus and Schizophyllum commune, respectively (Bensaude, 1918; Kniep, 1920).
